Caring for a terminally ill Hospice patient can be very rewarding and at the same time very stressful and demanding work. Hospice care is a blessing because most patients are cared for in their homes surrounded by family and friends. Many families are lucky to have additional support that may include church members or neighbors who regularly give a helping hand.
Sadly, a large number of our families and patients are not so fortunate. Many of our caregivers are trying to do it all and sometimes they are elderly and sick as well. Other patients live alone or in nursing homes because they have little to no support from family or friends.
It is with these thoughts in mind that I request members of the community to join our Odyssey hospice volunteer program. Anyone able to give three hours a week for the next six months or more is invited to become a part of the very special group of volunteers who are making a difference.
For home patients, volunteers are needed to give relief time to caregivers by allowing them to get some much needed rest, run errands or perhaps keep a doctor’s appointment, go to the grocery store or complete funeral arrangements. Patients in nursing homes and those living alone need volunteers for support and companionship.
